Day 1: Arrival, Check-in & Sightseeing

Vijaya Vittala Temple

Constructed by King Devaraya II of Vijayanagara Dynasty, this temple dates back to the 15th century. It is one of the most striking tourist attractions of Hampi. It is dedicated to Lord Vittala or Lord Krishna. The Stone chariot in the temple complex and the musical pillars are unmissable here.

Malyavanta Hill

Another place to visit for a picturesque sunset is the Malyavanta Hill. It is also a common place for trekkers. A vast temple complex is located on the top of the hill. The main temple in the complex is the Malyavanta Raghunatha Temple. Lord Rama is the main deity of this temple.

Bhima's Gateway

It used to be one of the strongest entrances to the walled city of Vijayanagara Dynasty. This archway is between the domed gate and the Ganagitti Jaina Temple. The structure of this gate is in such a curved manner that it is difficult to find a way out in straight-line.

Ganagitti Jain Temple

One of the oldest structures of Hampi, this Jain temple was built in the 14th century. You will find this temple on the way to another popular attraction- Bhima's Gate. It is dedicated to the 17th Thirthankara, Kunthunatha.

Pattabhirama Temple

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple was also built during the Vijayanagara rule. It has Dravidian style of architecture with intricate carvings and sculptures. It is located in the centre of the town.

Narasimha Monolith Temple/ Lakshmi Narasimha Temple

One of the largest monolithic idols in Hampi, it is a site worth visiting. The idol is around 6.7 metres long. This temple was built in 1528 during the rule of King Krishnadevaraya. On its southwestern side, you will find the Krishna Temple.

Badavilinga Temple

Housing the largest monolithic Shiva Linga of Hampi, with a height of 3 metres. It is located near the Lakshmi Narasimha Temple. The Shiva Linga in this ancient temple is surrounded by a pool of water.

Krishna Temple

Built in the 16th century, this ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna as an infant, which is why it is also called as Balakrishna Temple. It was built by King Krishnadevaraya after conquering Udayagiri (Orissa) Kingdom. The temple has a striking entrance with detailed carvings. The walls of temples display carvings of 10 avatars of Lord Vishnu.

Virupaksha Temple

This ancient temple stands on the banks of River Tungabhadra. It has been recognised as the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is dedicated to Sri Virupaksha, who is also known as Lord Shiva. Its history can be traced back to the 7th Century. Its present structure with intricate carvings, magnificent pillars and shrines was built during the Vijayanagara reign.

Sasivekalu Ganesha Temple

Boasting of the largest statue of Lord Ganesha in Hampi, it is a major attraction of the town. Dedicated to Lord Ganesha, this temple has an 8 feet tall monolith idol. The statue is placed on a raised platform with several pillars around it.

Hemakuta Hill Temple

The hill is known for the exceptional view as well as religious association. You will find a cluster of temples here, most of them dedicated to Lord Shiva. Although they are mostly in ruins now, they still display architectural beauty during the pre-Vijayanagara and Vijayanagara reign.

Queen's Bath

An exquisite bathing chamber for the Queens of the Vijayanagara Dynasty, it has been built in the style of Indo-Islamic architecture. The interiors are especially worth noticing with their ornamentation.

Mahanavami Platform

12 metres high, it is a stone platform built in the Vijayanagara architectural style by King Krishnadevaraya. Consuctured in 1513 AD, it was used as a stage for the King and the royals to watch the success celebration, after the conquest over Udayagiri Kingdom.

Hazara Rama Temple

Once a private temple for the kings of Vijayanagara Dynasty, this temple is dedicated to Lord Rama. It was built by King Devaraya II in the 15th century and was later renovated. You can enter the temple grounds via two grand gateways. Although small in size, its structure is still exceptional with carved panels and relics.

Zenana Enclosure

It is a walled compound, which was reserved for the females of the Royal families of Vijayanagara Dynasty. It houses many famous tourist attractions of Hampi such as Lotus Mahal, Queen's palace, Queen's Palace and the treasury building. Enclosed in a rectangular shape, it had four watchtowers, one on each side.

Lotus Mahal

Also known as the Chitrangini Mahal, it is the place where the royal family of Vijayanagara Empire used to reside. It is in the shape of half opened Lotus, with its central dome as a bud and the rest of the structure as petals. It has two stories and is adorned with intricate carvings.

Elephant Stable

Another must visit location is the Elephant Stable. Built in the Indo-Islamic style of architecture, it was the place where royal Elephants were kept. It is located only a few minutes away from Hazara Rama Temple, which is also a popular sightseeing location of Hampi. Built in the 15th century it is one of the few structures from Vijayanagar Empire which was not destroyed during the Deccan Sultanate capture.

Tungabhadra river coracle ride

One of the most popular activities is going for a coracle ride at the River Tungabhadra. You can ride up to the centre of the river in your coracle and even take part in fishing with the other fishermen.

Kodandarama Temple

One of the most revered temples of Hampi, it is dedicated to Lord Rama. In the inner sanctum of this temple, you will see idols of Lord Rama, Goddess Sita and Lord Lakshmana. It is believed to be the place where Lord Rama had killed Bali and crowned Sugreeva.

Achyutaraya Temple

Built in the 16th century, it is dedicated to Lord Tiruvengalanatha, a form of Lord Vishnu. This temple, with its detailed carvings, sculpted pillars and slightly secluded location, is one of the most attractive hidden treasures of Hampi.

Matanga Hills

It is the best place to visit for an enchanting Sunset and sunrise and the panoramic view of the Hampi town. It also boasts of being the highest point of Hampi, which is also why it is a popular site for trekking and adventure seekers. At the top of the hill, you will also see a small temple.
