Bhima’s Gate (or Bhima’s Gateway) is one of Hampi’s hidden gems. It’s an imposing entrance gate that has existed since the Vijayanagara rule. It’s one of the many complex gateways that allowed one to enter the fortified, walled city of Vijayanagara in those times.

The gate got its name from the carving of Bhima (a character in the Hindu epic Mahabharata) on one of its panels. It’s constructed in a way that attackers would find it difficult and perplexing to pass through. The structure has many blind spots created for an invading army.

Hampi’s Bhima Gate is about 5 km away from Hampi Bazar, near Ganagitti Jain Temple. It’s believed to be the strongest gateway of Vijayanagara because it has withstood the test of time.

History of Bhima’s Gate Hampi

Bhima’s Gate in Hampi is an example of Vijayanagara’s strong defence system. It’s part of the fortified city’s massive walls dotted with large gateways. These gateways had adjacent small shrines with sculptures of Bhima and Hanuman, two characters in Hindu mythology associated with immense strength and valour.

This gateway has a carving of Bhima etched on it. He’s considered to be the strongest among the Pandava brothers in the Hindu epic Mahabharata. Thus, Bhima’s Gate is considered one of the strongest gateways built during the Vijayanagara Empire.

Things to do at Bhima’s Gate

1. Admiring the architectural design – Bhima Gateway is built in Vijayanagara’s classic military style of architecture. The interesting feature of Bhima’s Gate is that it has several blind spots to create trouble for an invading army. To go forward, one has to keep moving left and right in close succession. It was even more difficult for the elephant-mounted forces of those times. It’s an ongoing excavation site, and you can explore the construction style in this huge arch complex up close.

2. Exploring the gateway’s carvings – Hampi’s Bhima Gate has a prominent carving of Bhima, a Pandava brother (from the Mahabharata epic). Its panels also have different murals depicting incidents from the life of Draupadi (the Pandava brothers’ wife). Among these panels, there also are murals depicting Bhima slaying Keechaka (who tried to molest Draupadi) and bringing a flower called Saugandhika for Draupadi.
