Hazara Rama Temple (also called Hazari Rama Temple) is a temple complex dedicated to Lord Rama. It’s believed to have been a private place of worship for the Royal family. And it was considered one of the most important places during the Vijayanagara rule.

What makes Hampi Hazara Rama Temple unique is the large number of Ramayana panels on the exterior walls. “Hazara Rama” literally translates to a thousand Rama, referring to those Ramayana panels. They depict the story from the Hindu epic Ramayana.

The temple was originally built in a small space. It was later renovated and extended to include other structures within the current rectangular complex. A high wall encloses everything.

Although the temple doesn’t have any idols today, it tells the story of the glorious past of the Vijayanagara Empire. And like many other monuments in Hampi, the intricate carvings in the temple are proof of the artistic and architectural abilities of Hampi’s people.

History of Hazara Rama Temple Hampi

Hazara Rama Temple’s history dates back to the early 16th century. It was constructed during the reign of Vijayanagara king Devaraya I, who wished to build a grand temple in honour of Lord Rama. It’s said to have been constructed in 1513.

Throughout its history, the temple received generous support from the kings, serving as both a place of worship and a royal shrine. Only the king and royal family members could visit the temple initially. Later, it became open to all citizens, and it remains an integral part of India’s cultural heritage.

The temple site is also said to have some of the rarest relics and historical objects, dating back to the age of Lord Rama and Krishna. It has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And it’s a protected heritage site under the Archaeological Survey of India as well.

Architecture of Hazara Rama Temple

Hazara Rama Temple’s architecture is an example of a traditional architectural style from the Vijayanagara era. The temple complex is rectangular in shape, and it’s set amidst a sprawling green courtyard. A high wall encloses the entire complex, with the main entrances on the east.

Initially, the complex had only a sanctum, an Ardha Mandapa and a pillared hall. Later, the open porch with tall and elegant pillars was added. Apart from the main sanctum of Lord Rama, the complex also has a small shrine dedicated to Goddess Sita. The temple complex also houses a Maha mandapa, a dance hall and elegant pavements with numerous pillars.

Hazara Rama Temple is well-known for its intricate carvings related to incidents from the Hindu epic Ramayana. These stories and many other carvings have been laid out in rows throughout the outer walls of the temple. The life of Rama and the fight between Rama and Ravana, and through it, the triumph of good over evil have all been carved in a vivid manner.
