Sree Kodandarama Temple Hampi Address: Hampi, Karnataka, 583239, India
Sree Kodandarama Temple is a small temple situated on the bank of the Tungabhadra River in Hampi. Kodandarama means bowed Rama, and the temple is dedicated to the warrior form of Lord Rama, holding a bow.
It’s at the end of Virupaksha Bazaar, facing a bathing ghat in the river called Chakrathirtha. Although Kodandarama Temple Hampi looks humble compared to other temples nearby, it’s equally important. It’s still in use, and it’s considered a centre of religious pilgrimage.
History of Sree Kodandarama Temple
Hampi Kodandarama Temple has several legends and myths associated with it. It’s said to be one of the oldest places of worship in the state. It’s believed that the temple has been standing there since the time of Ramayana.
One of the most popular beliefs is that this holy shrine stands on the spot where Lord Rama crowned the monkey king, Sugriva, as the ruler of Kishkindha after killing Bali. Sugriva is said to have carved the idols of Rama, Laxmana and Sita in the sanctum. Also, the temple sanctum has an idol of Sugriva (instead of Hanumana) bowing to Rama.

Architecture of Kodandarama Temple Hampi
Compared to other temples in the region, Sree Kodandarama Temple is religiously significant, instead of architecturally. The rectangular garbhagriha of the temple has 15 feet tall standing figures of Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshmana carved out of a natural boulder on the hillside. The statues of Rama and Laxamana have a bow in their hand.
The temple complex also has a small mantapa and a courtyard for circumambulation. A series of steps from the courtyard lead to the river and the bathing ghat in front. But these steps and the pathway to the temple are often submerged during heavy rains.
