Dasara Dibba / Mahanavami Dibba Hampi Address: The Great Platform, Hampi, Karnataka, 583239, India
Dasara Dibba (or Mahanavami Dibba) is a high, three-tiered platform with intricate carvings built during the Vijayanagara Empire. From a distance, it looks like an ordinary elevated square stage. The delicate carvings and detailing start to appear once you get closer to it.
The platform got the name because the Vijayanagar royals used it as a viewing area for all nine days of Mahanavami festivities before Dussehra (or Dasara). It was perhaps also used by the kings (and visiting nobility from other regions) to preside over military parades.
Hampi Mahanavami Dibba is situated within the Royal Enclosure in Hampi. And with a height of 12 metres, it’s the tallest structure in the area. It was a focal point of the Vijayanagara rule.
History of Mahanavami Dibba Hampi
Dasara Dibba / Mahanavami Dibba was built by Vijayanagara king Krishnadevaraya in 1513 after conquering Udayagiri (present-day Orissa). Since then, the kings have used the grand platform to watch royal processions and other festivities.
The sides of this three-layered platform are finely carved with chains of sculptures. They depict everything from the royal ceremony to city life and hunting scenes. It was probably made as a photo gallery for the foreign envoys who visited the capital of Vijayanagara.
Dasara Dibba, however, is in a ruined state now, with many carvings of the platform damaged. The entire Royal Enclosure, in fact, has been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
