Royal Enclosure Hampi Address: 4 Km from Hampi, Bellary, Hampi, Karnataka, 583239, India
Royal Enclosure is an expansive, walled complex filled with the ruins of palaces, pavilions and temples. It once served as the ceremonial and administrative hub of Vijayanagara Empire and the epicenter of royal activities.
The intricate architecture and rich history of the complex provide a captivating glimpse into the splendour of the dynasty. The most impressive structure here is the remnant of the majestic Mahanavami Dibba, a high platform from which kings viewed grand celebrations. The Durbar Hall (or 100-Pillared Hall) is another notable structure in Hampi Royal Enclosure.
The fortified complex is on the outskirts of Hampi. Walking through the place, you can almost hear the echoes of ancient royal processions and festivities.
History of Hampi Royal Enclosure
The Royal Enclosure was where the royal family of the Vijayanagara Empire used to live. The royal court was also held in this complex. It’s spread over an area of 59,000 square metres, and it’s said to have housed over 45 buildings used by the royals.
Today, only stone platforms are present to mark where different palaces and buildings once stood. Many of the structures were made of wood, and they have been damaged entirely. The relics and details left behind tell fascinating tales from our history.

Things to do at Royal Enclosure Hampi
Royal Enclosure Hampi is like an open-air museum that showcases the architectural brilliance of the Vijayanagara Empire. Exploring the structures here takes you on a journey through time.
You can start your adventure at the imposing Mahanavami Dibba. It’s an 8-metre-high platform adorned with intricate carvings used during celebrations. As you wander through the complex, you'll also come across the ingenious aqueduct system. This network of stone pipes connects over 20 wells and ponds, and it’s a testament to the advanced engineering of the era.
The stepped tank in the complex is another structure worth exploring. This five-tiered tank has a depth of 7 meters, and it was one of the major sources of water for the old town. It’s one of the best-preserved structures in the Royal Enclosure.
Hampi Royal Enclosure also has two bathing pavilions – the Octagonal Bath and the Queen’s Bath. The 100-pillared Durbar Hall and the mysterious underground chamber are other places to explore. Each crumbling palace base and weathered pillar has a story to tell, telling stories of a once-mighty kingdom.
Once you have explored the Royal Enclosure, you can visit the nearby Zenana Enclosure. It was a fortified and secluded area reserved for the royal ladies of the Vijayanagara Empire. Lotus Mahal is one of the most remarkable structures in this complex.
Hazara Rama Temple is also nearby. The temple is dedicated to Lord Rama, and it features detailed bas-reliefs that bring the Ramayana to life before your eyes.
