Ganagitti Jaina Basadi is one of the earliest structures constructed during the Vijayanagara rule in Hampi. It’s a Jain temple dedicated to Kunthunatha, the 17th Thirthankara. Thus, the temple is also referred to as Kunthunatha Jaina Temple.

It’s one of the notable temples in this ancient town, and it’s visited by a large number of tourists every year. Ganagitti Temple roughly translates to “oil woman’s temple.” However, why this temple is named so is not known.

Ganagitti Sri Jaina Basadi is a simple stone structure located on Kampli Road. The complex consists of a pillared mandapa and a square sanctum, enclosed within plain walls.

History of Ganagitti Jain Temple

Ganagitti Jain Temple Hampi was built by Iruguppa Daṇḍanayaka, the minister of Bukkaraya II under the rule of Harihara II. An inscription in front of the temple dates its construction to 1385 CE. It’s one of the prominent Jain temples built during the Vijayanagara Empire in Hampi. And it was here as the town was being set up as the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire.

The temple is to the southeast of the urban core of ancient Hampi. It doesn’t have an idol, but it’s said to have one, as the stone pedestal of an idol is still present here. You can also see footmarks (believed to be of the Thirthankara) inside.

Unlike most structures and temples in Hampi, Ganagitti Jaina Basadi has managed to escape destruction. It’s in particularly good condition even today, and it’s one of the few well-preserved historic structures in the region.

The vimana over the sanctum is built with stone, resembling a stepped pyramid. The temple also has several Jain sculptures in different places.
