Sri Krishna Temple / Bala Krishna Temple Hampi Address: Hampi, Karnataka, 583239, India
Nestled amidst the ruins of Hampi, Sri Krishna Temple (or Bala Krishna Temple) stands as an exemplary structure of Vijayanagara’s architectural brilliance. The temple is dedicated to Bala Krishna, representing Lord Krishna in his infant form. And its intricately carved pillars, majestic sanctum, and rich history attract travellers and history enthusiasts alike.
Built in 1513, Hampi Krishna Temple is a significant historical and cultural landmark in this ancient town. The temple complex has weathered centuries of wear and tear, and it’s not a functional shrine these days. Its beautiful main sanctum is devoid of any statues.
Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or a curious soul seeking cultural immersion, Sri Krishna Temple is a must-visit spot. It’s located close to Virupaksha Temple, as part of the Hampi group of monuments, recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
History of Krishna Temple Hampi
According to Hampi Krishna Temple history, the temple was built by the Vijayanagara ruler Krishnadevaraya in 1513. He built it after sealing a victory over the ruler of the eastern kingdom of Udayagiri (now Orissa). However, later, the complex was plundered by invading Muslim forces of the Deccan Sultanates.
The Bala Krishna idol established in the temple is said to be brought from Udayagiri. It’s no longer kept in the temple sanctum, however. The statue has been kept in the State Museum at Chennai for proper maintenance and preservation.

Things to do at Sri Krishna Temple
Sri Krishna Temple in Hampi is a testament to the architectural grandeur of the Vijayanagara Empire. As you approach this remarkable structure, you can see its architectural features and numerous intricate carvings.
The temple complex was built in Panchayathana style with two enclosures. The main shrine is in the centre. It also includes a maha mandapa, an ardha mandapa, and a pillared pavilion. You'll encounter many other small shrines and pillared halls as you explore the place.
Take your time to admire the spectacular craftsmanship, paying special attention to the Yalis (mythical lions) on the pillars and the elephant riders flanking the entrances to the temple hall. The main tower at the east, adorned with numerous exquisite carvings, is also an outstanding example of Vijayanagara architecture.
You should also explore the large rectangular building outside the main temple area. It was likely a granary attached to the temple. And across the road from Bala Krishna Temple is a carved boulder with a small rectangular opening at the top, which is used by devotees to offer food grains.
The nearby ruins of Krishna Bazaar are also worth exploring. During festivals, the Lord Krishna idol used to be placed in a chariot and taken in procession through this bazaar.
The temple tank called Kalyani is also close, at one corner of this street.
