Anegundi is a village in Karnataka, known for its rich history. Surrounded by hills, Anegundi also boasts picturesque landscapes along River Tungabhadra.
The village is said to be older than Hampi, and it’s believed to be the ancient monkey kingdom Kishkindha mentioned in Ramayana. It was also the first capital of the Vijayanagara Empire. And it has retained its rustic charms.

History of Anegundi
Anegundi Hampi is believed to be the place used for bathing the elephants of the Vijayanagara Empire. Anegundi means elephant pit in Kannada. It was the first capital of the empire, and it was in its full glory during that time period.
Anegundi’s history, however, goes beyond the era of the Vijayanagara rule. It’s said to exist during the timeline of the Hindu epic Ramayana. It’s believed to be the legendary kingdom of Kishkindha, ruled by the monkey kings Sugriva and Bali. The village and the vicinity are also part of one of the oldest plateaus on earth.
Geologists say that the area around Anegundi is as old as our earth. Traces of prehistoric human settlements have been found in Anegundi, making it a fascinating medley of history, mythology and geology.

1. Visiting Anegundi’s historical ruins – Anegundi has two prehistoric era clusters: Maurya Mane and Onake Kindi. According to geologists, this place is around four billion years old. At Maurya Mane, you’ll see megalithic dolmens (cave-like structures) from the Neolithic period. And at Onake Kindi, you’ll find evidence of prehistoric settlements in the form of rock paintings.
2. Exploring sacred Nava Brindavana island – Nava Brindavana in Anegundi is a historic place sacred to the followers of the saint Raghavendra. The place has the sacred tombs of nine Madhava saints, including that of Raghavendra Tirtha, better known as Sri Raghavendra Swami. The daily rituals are carried out by priests living in Raghavendra Mutt in Anegundi.
3. Checking out temples to visit near Anegundi – Anegundi has several other temples apart from the one on Nava Brindavana island. Durga Temple, Ganesha Cave Temple and Pampa Sarovar Lakshmi Temple are among the most popular of them. Jain Temple, Chintamani Shiva Temple and Lord Ranganatha Temple are also frequented by tourists.
4. Seeing Anegundi Fort and other places – Apart from the temples and archaeological sites, Anegundi Fort is another popular tourist destination. It has tombs of several members of the royal family. Gagan Mahal, 64 Pillared Mantapa and Bali’s Cave are also worth visiting. While you’re entering Anegundi, you can also stop by the Modaline Bagalu entrance gate and the statue of Sri Krishnadevaraya (from the Vijayanagara Empire) that welcomes you.

Anegundi is on the opposite bank of River Tungabhadra from Hampi. It’s only 5 km away, if you’re crossing the river by a coracle. The Hampi bus stand is also about 5 km away from the village. A comfortable but longer road route via the Anegundi Bridge is also available. Anegundi is about 20 km from Hampi through this route.
The nearest railway station is in Hospet (14 km away), and the nearest airport is in Toranagallu (37 km away), also known as Jindal Vijaynagar Airport. The nearest international airport to Anegundi Hampi is in Bengaluru (356 km away).
