Monolithic Bull Hampi Address: Nimbapura, Hampi, Karnataka, 583239, India
Also known as Yeduru Basavanna, Hampi Monolithic Bull is a colossal statue depicting Nandi, the sacred bull of Lord Shiva. Thus, this statue is colloquially referred to as Nandi as well. And the giant size of this Nandi statue has made this place a tourist hotspot.
In Hindu mythology, Nandi is Lord Shiva's faithful vehicle. Thus, even though the statue isn’t as detailed as other structures in Hampi, it evokes a sense of admiration due to its religious significance. Carved from a single granite boulder, this Monolith Bull is over 15 feet tall and 27 feet long. It’s established on a two-storey pavilion built on a raised platform.
The Monolithic Bull is built facing the Virupaksha Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It marks the end of Hampi Bazaar. It’s a breathtaking example of the artistic and engineering prowess of ancient India. The giant boulders in the background also add to its beauty.
History of Monolithic Bull Hampi
The Hampi Monolithic Bull is over 500 years old, and it belongs to the Vijayanagara era. The sculpture is believed to have been constructed on the orders of a Vijayanagara ruler during the peak of the empire.
This impressive statue has a unique charm of its own. Even though it lacks elaborate carvings, it still prominently displays the features of a bull. And it has withstood the extensive destruction carried out by the Mughals in the 16th century.
However, this bull statue couldn’t escape the clutches of time and weather. Still, in its semi-ruined condition, it attracts many tourists who visit the Hampi ruins.
