Krishna Bazaar is one of the recently excavated sites in Hampi. It’s part of the larger Hampi group of ruins, which have been marked as a UNESCO Heritage Site. Similar to all structures in Hampi, Krishna Bazaar reflects the Vijayanagara Empire’s grandeur and prosperity.

The market was essentially the chariot street associated with the Krishna Temple. The Krishna idol of the temple was taken on a large procession through this street on auspicious days. The street is over half a kilometre long and about 50 m wide, and it has several pavilions with a stone base on the sides. The sacred tank of the temple is also located next to the bazaar.

Krishna Bazaar Hampi is located near the Krishna Temple. It was once a bustling centre of trade like the larger Virupaksha Bazaar, with several shops lining both sides of the street. Today, it’s a deserted area with broken boulders and banana plantations.

History of Krishna Bazaar Hampi

An inscription near the excavated site indicates that this bazaar area was the chariot street for the nearby Krishna Temple. It’s also said that Krishna Bazaar was a major market for grains, and tax was collected on the sales every week. The market was low lying with respect to the relatively elevated temple site.

Due to its low-lying terrain, the whole bazaar got buried in silt over the years. Later, this area turned into thickets of banana plantations. Before the site was excavated, it seemed unlikely that this region was a marketplace once.

Things to do at Krishna Bazaar

1. Exploring the ancient marketplace – Take a stroll through the excavated site to see the long rows of pavilions that once were a bustling market along the chariot street. The rubbles of old structures and cobbled pathways offer a glimpse into the vibrant commercial life of ancient Hampi. You can also venture into trails beyond the bazaar street to get a better view of Krishna Bazaar and its surroundings.

2. Checking out Krishna Temple – The nearby Krishna Temple is an old shrine dedicated to Lord Krishna. It’s a remarkable structure with unique architecture, built by the Vijayanagara king Krishnadevaraya. During special festivals, the idol of Lord Krishna used to be placed in a chariot and taken in procession through the Krishna Bazaar. You can also see a carved boulder with a small rectangular opening at the top, where devotees offered food grains.

3. Visiting the sacred Pushkarini tank – At one corner of the bazaar area is the holy water tank associated with Hampi Krishna Temple. In the old days, it served the ritualistic purposes of the temple, and devotees used it for different festive events. During dry seasons, you can see the various aqueducts that feed water to the tank and might even be able to walk to the small pavilion at the centre.
