Octagonal Bath Hampi Address: , Hampi, Karnataka, 583239, India
Hampi is home to various historical monuments and structural ruins. Octagonal Bath, a gigantic bathing area constructed in the shape of an octagon, is one of them. Among several baths, pushkaranis (sacred tanks), and water pavilions excavated in Hampi, this bath is one of the best-preserved ancient artificial water bodies.
Like most monuments in Hampi, the Octagonal Bath is abandoned and empty. The bathing tank has a small octagonal platform around which water used to be stored. And encircling the entire tank is a pillared veranda.
Octagonal Bath Hampi is located in an isolated place near Chandrashekara Temple. Close to the bath, several other ruined structures, which might have been foundations of royal palaces, can also be found.
Things to do at Octagonal Bath
Octagonal Bath Hampi offers a glimpse into the architectural sophistication of Vijayanagara artisans. This design not only served a functional purpose but also reflected the aesthetic sensibilities of the era. The platform’s symmetrical octagonal shape, the circular water area surrounding it, and the encircling pillared veranda create a visually striking composition.
The area around the bath is dotted with intriguing ruins, likely bases of once-grand royal palaces. While the bath is now empty, you can picture it filled with water, serving as a royal retreat. Take time to explore the place, trying to listen to the story of their heyday.
Once you’ve checked out Octagonal Bath, you can take the nearby trail to the once-imposing Srinagarada Hebbagailu (meaning Gateway to Citadel). This less-trodden trail runs through the centre of the gateway to the famous Elephant Stables and Zanana Enclosure area. During Vijayanagara rule, it used to be one of the main entrance points to the inner core of the royal area.
