Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary Hampi Address: Seetharama Tanda, Hampi, Karnataka, 583215, India
Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary is the first wildlife sanctuary in India and Asia exclusively for the conservation of sloth bears. These bear species are native to the Indian subcontinent, and Daroji Bear Sanctuary is the only place to see them in captivity. It’s on the outskirts of Hampi.
Spread over 80 sq. km, this sprawling sanctuary has rock-strewn hillocks interspersed by scrub jungle. In addition to free-ranging sloth bears, Daroji Wildlife Sanctuary is known to have other mammals and birds. It also houses an amazing collection of rare and endangered Deccan flora.
History of Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary Hampi
In 1994, the state government decided to develop 56 sq. km of Bilikallu Reserve Forest as a bear sanctuary. Following that, the Forest Department turned the barren hillocks and thorny trees into a verdant land with many local species of flora and fauna. Wild fruit-bearing trees were grown, and waterholes were created in line with the development.
Provisions were made to ensure a supply of honey for the bears if needed. Ants and termites, another favourite of the bears, were also made available. Thus, Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary Hampi was established.
