Ranganatha Temple is one of the oldest temples of Hampi. It’s dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, a resting form of Vishnu on the serpent god Adishesha. Surrounded by bouldered landscapes and the ruins of a once-glorious empire, it offers a quiet escape for tourists and pilgrims alike.

The temple is located in a serene environment near the Achyutaraya Temple. It’s a dilapidated shrine with intricately carved stone pillars and a high porch welcoming the devotees. However, more than a religious site, this sacred site is a breathtaking embodiment of the region’s rich history and cultural heritage.

Things to do at Hampi Ranganatha Temple

Hampi Ranganatha Temple is a quiet corner in the town that invites you to pause and soak in its spiritual and historical charm. The main attraction here is the beautifully carved idol of Lord Vishnu, reclining on the cosmic snake Anantha (or Adishesha). Vishnu is accompanied by his consorts, Goddess Lakshmi and Bhudevi. Lord Brahma is also nearby, seated on a lotus.

Even though the sanctum has faced the wear and tear of time, its divine aura makes it a must-visit. The Vishnu idol has four arms; with the head of the snake and a chakra on the right side arms, and a conch shell in one of the left side arms. The other left arm rests by his side.

The temple architecture is rather simple. It’s built in a rectangular shape with a porch outside the sanctum. Except for the carved idols, only a few carvings on the walls or pillars are visible.
