Stepped Tank Hampi Address: Hampi, Karnataka, 583239, India
Hampi Stepped Tank is one of the most striking remnants of the architectural brilliance of the Vijayanagara Empire. It was excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India in the 1980s, and its fine ornate carvings are well-preserved.
The tank is constructed using finely finished blocks of black stone. Unlike temple tanks meant for rituals, this stepped tank was reserved for royal or ceremonial use. Through a network of aqueducts, it was constantly replenished with fresh water from the Tungabhadra River.
Stepped Tank in Hampi is tucked within the Royal Enclosure. This five-tiered, symmetrical tank has fascinated tourists visiting this historic town.
Things to do at Hampi Stepped Tank
The key attraction of Stepped Tank Hampi is the intricate and symmetric layout of the steps cut out of stone. It has five tiers of steps in a crisscross pattern, forming a perfect pyramid shape on all four sides.
You can spend time here just admiring the craftsmanship. Each stone block has numerals, symbols, and Kannada letters, making this stepped tank a significant structure that showcases the techniques of ancient architects.
The aqueducts (water channels) supplying the Stepped Tank are an engineering wonder in itself. The water was brought from the mighty Tungabhadra River, around 3 km away.
