History of Stone Chariot Hampi

Hampi Stone Chariot’s history goes back to the 16th century, to the Vijayanagara rule. It’s said that King Krishnadevaraya became fascinated with the chariot at Konark Sun temple in Odisha while fighting a battle. And to represent the superior artisanship of the Vijayanagara Empire, he ordered a similar one to be built in his kingdom.

Although the structure is built like a chariot, it’s said to be a shrine. It used to have a statue of Garuda, Lord Vishnu’s escort. The statue was destroyed during the mass plundering of Hampi, and the Stone Chariot stands empty now.

During restoration, the wheels were cemented in place to avoid further damage to the chariot. The elephants that appear to pull this chariot were also built during the restoration efforts. The original structure had horses.

Today, the stone chariot is considered an iconic heritage monument of India. It also appears in the new ₹50 currency notes issued in 2017.

Architecture of Hampi Stone Chariot

The Stone Chariot in Hampi is a part of the grand of the Vittala Temple complex. It’s built on a rectangular platform in front of the temple, using giant granite blocks. And the detailing on the wheels, body and other components showcases the mastery of the artisans of the time.

It was built in the traditional Dravidian style with a pyramid-like structure. However, the current surviving structure has a flat top. The remnants of a ladder leading to the inner sanctum are also visible in the front.

On the base of the chariot, you can see beautiful mythical battle scenes in intricate detail. And the wheels have a series of concentric floral motifs carved with precision.

The chariot is a prime example of the characteristic intricate artisanship of the Vijayanagara architectural style. Although it looks like it’s carved out of one big rock, it’s made up of multiple parts, carved and connected together well.
