Sugriva's Cave in Hampi is a site of great mythological and historical significance. It’s a natural cave associated with the monkey king, Sugriva, mentioned in the Hindu epic Ramayana. The serene environment and the panoramic view from Sugriva Cave Hampi make it popular among tourists looking for offbeat attractions in the region.
The fascinating Sugreeva Cave is located near Kodandarama Temple, only a short walk from the town centre. It stands on the banks of the River Tungabhadra, nestled amidst the massive boulders that characterise Hampi’s hillocks.
History of Hampi Sugriva's Cave
According to Ramayana, Sugriva faced exile after being ousted by his brother, Bali. He sought refuge in this cave with his loyal monkey warriors. It’s on the border of his kingdom, Kishkindha (present-day Anegundi).
When Lord Rama came here looking for his wife, Sita (kidnapped by the demon king Ravana), Sugreeva met with him. He showed Devi Sita’s jewels that fell off from Ravana’s flying chariot. He agreed to help Rama in his search for Sita. In return, Rama helped Sugreeva get his kingdom back. This Sugriva’s Cave is believed to be where the meeting took place.

Things to do at Sugriva's Cave Hampi
1. Explore the cave complex – While Sugriva Cave holds massive significance in myths, it’s quite small. It’s more of an alcove than a sprawling cavern. The entrance is narrow, and the interior is mostly dark. The carvings of Rama & Laxmana’s footprints and a long mark of what’s said to be of Sita’s sari can be seen near the cave entrance.
2. Take a guided tour – The cave and the surrounding area are associated with fascinating stories from the Ramayana. Hire a guide to bring the legends and history of Sugreeva Cave to life. They can point out key landmarks and hidden details that you might miss on your own.
3. Visit Kodanda Rama Temple – Just a short walk from Sugriva’s Cave, this ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Rama. The temple faces Chakrathirtha, the most sacred bathing ghat in Hampi. And it houses a striking, 15-feet-tall idol of Lord Rama, along with Laxmana and Sita, making it a revered pilgrimage site.
