Links: Website | MapKing’s Balance in Hampi is one of the rarest structures that’s intact in this town of ruins. It’s an ancient balance scale carved beautifully in stone. While the balance is missing, the 5-metre-tall frame still stands like an archway.
The balance is also known locally as Tula Bhara or Tula Purushadana. On special occasions, it was used by the kings of Vijayanagara to weigh themselves in precious jewels and distribute them as charity.
King’s Balance is close to Vijaya Vittala Temple, to its southwest. Even though it no longer serves its designated purpose, it’s a reminder of the Vijayanagara Empire’s glory.
History of Kings Balance Hampi
Hampi King’s Balance was built in the 15th century, to be used by the Vijayanagara kings on various festive occasions. It was used on key events such as New Year’s Day, coronation days, lunar and solar eclipses as well as Dasara and other festivals.
According to traditions, the king used to weigh himself in precious gems, gold and silver, and give them to the temple priests in charity. Sometimes, grains and pulses were also weighed.
Special measures were taken to help the king gain extra weight for the occasion. The royal kitchen was instructed to prepare his favourite dishes, fatty foods were cooked, and the king would walk as little as possible.

1. Admiring the stone architecture – King’s Balance Hampi is an impressive stone structure featuring two 15-foot-high granite pillars that support a 12-foot-long stone beam. The beam has three hoops on the underside to hang the balances. The pillars are intricately carved, showcasing the architectural brilliance of the Vijayanagara Empire. One of them has a bas-relief depicting a king and two queens, most likely Krishna Deva Raya and his wives.
2. Learn its historical significance – The historic charm of this site makes it quite popular among tourists. During special occasions, the kings used to weigh themselves on this balance for charitable purposes. King’s Balance is open throughout the week, and you can visit it anytime during the day. You need less than 30 minutes to explore this place. Visit early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds. The winter season (November – February) is the best time to visit it.

Kings Balance is about 10 km from Hampi bus stand. The nearest railway station and airport are Hospet Junction (12 km) and Jindal Vijaynagar Airport (34 km), respectively. The closest international airport, however, is in Bengaluru (around 360 km away).
