Pushkarani in Hampi is among the most beautiful architectural structures of this ruined city. It’s one of the many ancient water tanks dotting the town, with well-laid stone steps that allow people to get into water easily.

Pushkarani water tanks in Hampi were mainly built for ritualistic use in temples or for the royal members of the Vijayanagara Empire. This stepped water tank was one of those accessible to the general public. It served as a communal hub, offering respite from the arid landscapes. It was also said to be used for ritual bathing and cleansing before prayers.

These tanks had a significant role in the overall water management system of this ruined city. They were connected to a network of stone aqueducts and channels that received fresh water from the Tungabhadra River.

Where is Pushkarani in Hampi?

Hampi has several pushkarani water tanks. One of the most accessible and elegant is the one in front of the Krishna Temple. It has a symmetrical layout crafted with meticulous precision. While the pushkarani was used for various important ceremonial functions during festivals, it was also available for the general public.

History of Hampi Pushkarani

Hampi Pushkarani is part of the ancient town’s planning and architecture from the time of the Vijayanagara Empire. It’s one of the many pushkaranis (sacred water tanks) used in temples for various rituals. This Pushkarani is no longer functional, though.

Although this Pushkarani is in front of the Krishna Temple, many other water tanks were built that aren’t related to the temples. The beautiful stepped well built within the Royal Enclosure is the most popular among them. It was reserved for the use of the members of the royal family of Vijayanagara.

Architecture of Hampi Pushkarani

Pushkarani is a remarkable water tank known for its structural beauty. It has a symmetrical square-shaped design, and it’s surrounded by a pavilion with rows of carved pillars. A raised platform in the middle of the tank further enhances its attraction.

The design provides tiered steps carved into the side of the tank, allowing easy access to the water. These steps are cut out in semi-pyramidal form, and one flight of stairs leads you down to the level with the next set.
