Palace of Vira Harihara Hampi Address: Hampi, Karnataka, 583239, India
The Palace of Vira Harihara is a lesser-known historical place to visit in Hampi. It was the home of the rulers of the Vijayanagara Empire. But what was once a massive edifice is ruined now. Only the base of the palace structure is visible today. Still, it evokes admiration for the grandeur of the Vijayanagar rulers.
The palace is located within the fortified area of the Royal Enclosure in Hampi, close to the Hazara Rama Temple. And it has always made tourists curious. Many people enjoy visiting this area where the palace had once stood.
Things to do at the Palace of Vira Harihara
1. Learning about the palace’s history – Vira Harihara Palace is an ancient structure that dates back to the 14th century. It’s believed to be the legacy of Vira Harihara II, and it remained in use till 1565. The attack by the Deccan Sultanate that led to the mass destruction in Hampi ruined this magnificent palace as well.
2. Understanding its architecture – The Palace of Vira Harihara has long ceased to exist. The only surviving trace of a once-splendid wooden palace is its ornate base. The elaborate carvings and remnants, though, reveal glimpses of an architectural style that once defined royal luxury in the Vijayanagara era.
3. Exploring nearby structures – The palace complex has several other ruins, including a high platform for kings to mount royal elephants. A rectangular well with a carved Nandi head, a royal court hall, and a kitchen area are other ruins on the palace grounds.
