Ranga Mantapa Hampi Address: Hampi, Karnataka, 583239, India
Nestled amidst the ancient ruins of Hampi, the Ranga Mantapa is a fine example of the artistry of a bygone era. The mantapa is known for its 56 musical pillars, each unique in its own right. It’s a masterpiece of architectural wonder that captivates visitors from around the world.
The “Sa re ga ma” (musical notes in traditional Indian music) pillars of Ranga Mantapa, as they’re called, are a true marvel of engineering. Tapping gently on these pillars, you can hear a symphony of such mesmerising notes. Two of them have even been cut to find the secret, but no extraordinary feature was found.
Ranga Mantapa Hampi is part of Shree Vijaya Vittala Temple premises, a vast temple complex near the banks of River Tungabhadra. And its wonders extend beyond the enchanting musical pillars to the architectural beauty of the hall.
Things to do at Ranga Mantapa
1. Marveling at the musical pillars – Hampi Ranga Mantapa is home to 56 musical pillars that produce music when you tap on them. While visitors are restricted from touching them (due to conservation efforts), you might be fortunate enough to witness a demonstration of the pillars’ musical magic by a security guard or guide. In the Vijaya Vittala Temple complex, you can also see two pillars that the British cut to find the secret behind the music.
2. Admiring architectural mastery – As you walk through the mandapa, observe the detailed carvings and ingenious layout that have puzzled historians for centuries. It features an ornate ceiling supported by thick pillars, each surrounded by seven minor pillars. The intricate design showcases the pinnacle of Vijayanagara architecture.
3. Exploring Vijaya Vittala Temple complex – The surrounding temple complex has several other architectural wonders. The most prominent among them is the Stone Chariot, an iconic symbol of Hampi's rich heritage. Kalyana Mandapa and Maha Mandapa are other structures worth seeing. They’re adorned with carvings depicting mythological stories and scenes from daily life during the Vijayanagara rule.
