Where is Tungabhadra Dam located?

Tungabhadra Dam is a dam constructed across the Tungabhadra River. It’s located in Hospet, about 20 km away from Hampi. It’s a multipurpose dam that also creates the largest reservoir on the Tungabhadra River.

History of Tungabhadra Dam

Tungabhadra Dam history goes back to the 1860s. It was when the British engineers needed a solution to get over the famine prevalent in the region. So, they planned to build a storage reservoir and a system of canals to irrigate the lands.

Investigations and negotiations lasted for about eighty years. After that, the dam’s construction started as a joint project between the erstwhile Hyderabad State and Madras Presidency. It became a project of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh later, which saw its completion in 1953.

The dam is pivotal in supporting agriculture in the region. As per the legends, this irrigation system of an extensive canal network existed even during the Vijayanagara rule. It’s said that the ruler constructed over 12 small dams across the river. 16 channels were made to supply this stored water to agricultural fields.

Things to do at Tungabhadra Dam

1. Exploring gardens and parks – The government started developing gardens and parks right after the completion of the dam. Nandanavana Garden is the first among them. It’s just downstream of the dam, built parallel to it. The garden has well-maintained lawns, flower beds and several fountains. Then, the nearby Japanese Park has ponds, flowering trees and other attractions like a musical fountain and aquarium. Other relaxation areas around Tungabhadra Dam include Vaikunt Guest House Garden, Circular Park and Triangular Park.

2. Checking out the mini zoo – Tungabhadra Dam has Deer Park nearby which is like a mini zoo in itself. It has several deer species, along with rabbits and porcupines. Besides, you’ll find various fish species and other aquatic animals in the reservoir. The place attracts birds, too. Pigeons, peacocks and parrots can be seen often. Pelicans, flamingos, storks and other birds can also be spotted here.

3. Boating in the reservoir – The reservoir offers a unique perspective of the dam’s grandeur. You can enjoy the beauty of the picturesque surroundings as you navigate the calm waters of Tungabhadra Dam backwater. Other recreational activities, like fishing, are also available here when the water level is high enough.

4. Marvelling at the sunset views – The dam takes on a mesmerising glow during the golden hours as the sun sets for the day. Whether you're atop the dam or at the designated viewpoint, you can witness the breathtaking beauty of the dam. Take photos of the changing colours of the sky and the scenic surroundings to capture the picturesque moment forever.

5. Enjoying Tungabhadra Dam light show – Experience the spectacular Tungabhadra Dam night view with the sound and light show. For the show, each dam gate is illuminated with different lights after sunset, creating a canvas of vibrant colours. It’s an experience you don’t want to miss during your Tungabhadra Dam visit.
